Diabetics that are insulin dependent have more reasons to lose the pounds when compared to those that are not diabetic. Most diabetics that are overweight must take insulin in order for them to live; it’s not about vanity or fitting into a pair of cute jeans- it’s all about their health and livelihood. Lowering blood glucose and improving the body’s response to insulin can reduce the use of medication when you are diabetic; the only way to truly do this is by exercise and healthy eating. Here are a few helpful tips for diabetics whom need to lose a few pounds the healthy way.
Tip 1: Eat Beans- these cute little veggies can honestly be your best friend when you’re a diabetic that needs to lose weight. Beans are full of filling fiber, along with potassium and magnesium.
Tip 2: Eat your Green Veggies- vegetables like spinach, collard greens, and kale all have very few calories; so you really can eat as much as you want of these foods. As an added bonus, they’re full of nutrients for your body.
Tip 3: Fish, fish, fish- that’s right, the American Diabetic Association recommends that all diabetics eat fish at least 2-3 times per week. Regardless if you grill or bake your fish; it’s a great healthy and non-fattening meat, just don’t bread or fry your fish!
Tip 4: Eat lots of fruit- citrus fruits and berries are wonderful ways to cure the sweet tooth for those that are diabetic. Small portion containers of fruit cocktail or sugar free applesauce are creative choices for those that want an easy snack to grab on the go.
Tip 5: Watch your dressings and oils- preparing your food are just as important as what you eat; make sure you use liquid oils instead of solid fats to cook with and make sure you use oils low in saturated and Tran’s fats.
Tip 6: Watch portion sizes- even if you eat the proper foods, you will still need to watch your portion sizes. Many diabetics invest in scales, measuring cups, or measuring spoons to ensure that they eat the right amount of certain foods. If you see yourself eating healthy and still not losing the weight; you may want to consider this a viable option.
Tip 7: Stay active- just as any other dieter must do; diabetics must stay active, as well. Studies show that activity increases the body’s response in relation to insulin and the natural ability for the body to lower glucose levels by burning calories.
Tip 8: Watch those carbohydrates – not only do carbohydrates add pounds to your body; they work against diabetics. When you are in need of a “Carb” fix, try eating whole grain choices, like brown rice or whole oatmeal.
